CITES CoP17 Fact Sheets

Image of CITES CoP17 Shark and Ray Coalition Logo - 2016During the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES CoP17)  – Johannesburg, South Africa, Sept 24 - Oct 5 2016 – countries, that have agreed to implement the Convention, will review proposals to implement controls on international trade in thirteen shark and ray species - nine species of devil rays, three species of thresher sharks and the silky shark.

Project AWARE, Shark Advocates International, The Shark Trust, Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), and World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF), with advice from TRAFFIC and the IUCN Shark Specialist Group, are working in partnership to support the proposals to include these commercially valuable shark and ray species in CITES Appendix II.
